Synopsis

⁣⁣This animated short film centers on a protagonist with a head as soft and fluffy as cotton, always impeccably dressed in the style of an old-school gentleman. He leads a rigorous and solitary life, dedicating himself year-round to nurturing two potted chili plants. His next-door neighbour is a mischievous bald man whose garden boasts an astonishing variety of flowers and plants. The subtle, lingering fragrance that often drifts from this garden captivates passersby, inviting them to pause and stay awhile.
After seeing the neighbour's dazzling floral displays attract endless admiration, the protagonist becomes entranced by a vision of beauty and romance he has never known. Consumed by doubt, the protagonist attempts to reshape his chili plants according to others’ expectations.
Passing through fantasies, disillusionment and chaos, the protagonist eventually rediscovers a state of primal innocence and embraces the original conviction that first drew him to cultivate chilli plants, accepting difference with quiet grace.
The protagonist neatly arranged his imperfect legacy—the scattered seeds of his chili plants—into his beloved teacup, placed it back in the cupboard. This specimen-like process embodies his resolute determination, allowing his purest hope to emerge from the silence of his former home.

About Director

⁣⁣Hexuan Zhang (born in 2000, Shenyang, China) is an animation director currently based in Chengdu. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Soochow University and completed her Master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in 2023.
In recent years, Hexuan has been continuously exploring the intersections between traditional painting materials and contemporary media. Her practice expands from animation into installation, examining the porous boundaries between image, material, and perception.
Influenced by Symbolism and Fauvism, Specifically in this film, she employs a print-transfer technique inspired by Paul Klee to create frame-by-frame imagery, later composited digitally into layered scenes. She distills complex environments into essential shapes and repeats certain motifs to construct natural spaces. Through the deliberate subversion of perspective rules, recurring depictions of the same space are progressively invested with symbolic meaning. This visual language invites not just observation, but immersion—into a world where feeling, thought, and form are inseparable.
